Séisme de 5,7 sur l'échelle de Richter au large de Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guinée (AFP, 5/4/99)
Une secousse tellurique d'une magnitude de 5,7 sur l'échelle de Richter s'est produite lundi au large de la
Nouvelle-Irlande, île de l'archipel Bismarck, en Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guinée, a annoncé le réseau national de surveillance
sismique à Strasbourg.   Le séisme a été enregistré à 11h07 gmt (13h07 heure de Paris) sous une latitude de 2,65 degrés Sud et une longitude de 153 degrés Est, a-t-on précisé de même source dans un communiqué.

Overnight, three tsunamis in Papua New Guinea wipe out entire communities (Asiaweek, week july 31, 1998) 
FIRST THE HOUSES TREMBLED. Then a sound swelled like an approaching jet engine. Excited children ran out onto the shore, expecting a glimpse of a low-flying aircraft in the darkening sky. Instead they met an impenetrable wall of water. There was simply nowhere to run. Three tsunamis, the largest 10 meters high, crashed onto a 30-kilometer stretch of Papua New Guinea's northwestern coast, washing seven villages clean away and smoothing the ground where they had stood until no trace remained. Triggered by an earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale, the huge waves pitched 10,000 people into inland lagoons or swept them out to sea. As many as 8,000 may be dead. Survivors tell of desperately rushing to reach boats, or clinging to the tops of the coconut trees where they were flung. Most are men, some are women, but almost an entire generation of children is feared lost - their bodies too fragile to withstand the battering of the ocean. As people trickled warily down from the hills where they had sought refuge, the wards of nearby hospitals filled with grieving parents. Some were lucky. One girl wandered injured and alone for four days before being chanced upon. A woman recounted how she had tied herself to a palm and hung onto her newborn twins, protecting them until the waters subsided. Rescuers raced to find other survivors before they succumbed to hunger or infection.
